The summer season is a time of vibrant colour and growth in the natural world. The green of the leaves, the buzzing of the bees, the heat of the sun are a delight to the senses.
How many times do you realize a day has passed and you haven’t even noticed the summer delights all around? I know it happens to me all the time. It is so easy to get caught in the busyness of life, and get pulled in by the cell phone, that my senses don’t have a chance to take in the beauty of the summer. And, how fast the summer does go by! Sometimes, we need the support of others to remind us to slow down.
I have been offering various outdoor groups for the past 3 years and I am amazed at the power of coming together with the intention of slowing down. The group creates a safe container to engage our senses to take in our surroundings and notice what changes for us. In fact, a whole new relationship with the natural world develops. All of a sudden the trees are alive, the birds’ music serenades us and the wisdom of the earth reminds us of our natural rhythms. We too have seasonal rhythms of rest and growth, ways to move towards life and protect ourselves against harm, and we also need the ‘right kind’ of nourishment to thrive. I have witnessed many times, when nature reminds us, a softening in how we treat ourselves begins to happen. And in turn, a softening in how we treat others and the earth begins. Our isolation ends and we find our place within the web of life.
I realize moving towards connection with self and others can be a scary thing. It is something most of us crave, and yet, fear at the same time. In a society that praises technology and social media, the experience of isolation and separation is real. Again, I am amazed at how the natural world reminds us of necessity of safe connection and holds a beautiful container for us to experiment with safe connecting. I will never forget a moment in an outdoor women’s group as we were sitting by the fire as the sun set. The soft glow of the fire invited a gentle space for the women to share their inner struggles that they worked so hard to hide. In a moment of sharing, another woman was moved to ask if she could hug this woman – they stayed embraced for over a minute. The tears welled in my eyes as both came from an isolated life where the impulse to give and receive physical touch was not available – and then it showed up with the safe conditions nature, and the group, offered.
My teacher always says, “with the right kind of conditions, people show up.” It is my heart’s desire to support you to find what those conditions are for you so you can show up in your life a little more you. I wonder what the natural world holds for you?
Thank-you for taking the time to read my reflections. I invite you to notice what is happening inside after reading this. Perhaps, a curiousity?
